Wir sitzen im Süden (Based Down South)

Martina Priessner (2010)

Germany, Turkey

Genre: Documentary

Martina Priessner's documentary tells the story Bülent, Murat, Fatoş and Çiğdem, who work in a call centre. When their phones ring these Turkish German call centre agents answer in fluent German, use German names and pretend that they are based in the south (of Germany). In fact, they are based much further south, namely in a German call centre in Istanbul. Now in their thirties and early forties, the four spent their childhood and formative years in Germany. The film explores what motivated them to 'return' to their parents' 'homeland', how they feel about living in Turkey, and traces their attempts to recreate Germany elsewhere.
