Migrant and Diasporic Cinema in Contemporary Europe

Luks Glück (Luk’s Luck)

Ayse Polat (2010)

Germany

A Turkish family in Germany hits the jackpot in the lottery. While the parents immediately want to fulfil their dream of returning home and plan to open a hotel in Kappadokine, their son Luk is, at first, unsure about what to do with his share of the money. The countless possibilities suddenly opening up actually depress him, and looking for a solution, he starts dating his ex-girlfriend Gül again and persuades her to record a music video with him. He invests his lottery win to finance the video production but falls prey to a scam and loses everything. When his dream of success does not come true he is faced with the harsh reality. But these failures finally offer him the chance to take his life into his own hands and to find happiness where he least expected it.

The screenplay was developed with the support of BABYLON Europe, a European film development initiative founded by Network participant Gareth Jones of Scenario Films Ltd. BABYLON is an audiovisual development programme that assists filmmakers of culturally diverse backgrounds to break thought into the international mainstream. It particularly supports projects that engage with issues of migration, diaspora and ethnic diversity. Ayse Polat participated with her film project Luks Glück in the BABYLON workshop held in Rotterdam in 2007.

She presented one of her previous films, En Garde, at the Research Network's inaugural conference in July 2006, Migrant and Diasporic Cinema in Contemporary Europe
