Glossary:
Cine de inmigración / Cine de inmigrantes
Language: Spanish
Immigrant cinema / Cinema of immigrants
Term used in Spanish film criticism and scholarship to refer to the growing number of films dealing with the relatively recent phenomenon of large-scale immigration over the last fifteen or twenty years. Las cartas de Alou (Armendáriz, 1990) is often referred to as the earliest example of this type of cinema in Spain. The terms, however, do not have such wide currency as in English, French or German, as little has been written on the topic in Spanish so far. It is noteworthy, moreover, that most feature films that concentrate on the experience of immigration in Spain have been made by non-immigrant filmmakers, a situation which will no doubt change as the various immigrant communities settle in the country and gain access to the mainstream channels of representation.
Cf. also Migrant and diasporic filmmakers
