The "Others". Ethnicity and "Race" in Spanish Cinema offers a thorough examination of the presence of "racial" difference in Spanish cinema. After an introductory chapter that presents a historical overview of the representation of ethnically-marked characters in Spanish cinema from the beginning until the late 1980s, the core of the book is divided in four further chapters, the first three analyzing in detail the representations of Gypsies, Africans, Asians, Easter Europeans and Spanish Americans, and the last one focusing on colonial narratives. These chapters adopt a dual perspective, giving both a panoramic vision of the various films in which ethnic minorities are portrayed, and an in-depth analysis of one or two illustrative films.

Among the films that are analyzed in some detail are: Alma gitana / Gypsy Soul (Chus Gutiérrez, 1995), Bwana (Imanol Uribe, 1996), Flores de otro mundo / Flowers from Another World (Iciar Bollain, 1999), En la puta calle / Down and Out (Enrique Gabriel, 1996), El espinazo del diablo / The Devil's Backbone (Guillermo del Toro, 2001) and Lejos de Africa / Black Island (Cecilia Bartolomé, 1996). As well as formal, thematic and ideological components, the book also considers the films' contexts of production and consumption.
