The term largely refers to internal migration within the former Soviet Union.
The Russian Federation inherited from the Soviet period a system of propiska (registration) at the place of residence. Registration is required whenever a citizen travels and resides long-term or for work purposes at a different place.

Does the Russian language have a separate word for transnational migration or is ‘migratsiia’ used as well? Or would transnational migration (i.e. emigration) be referred to as ‘exile’ or ‘emigration’?
